Automobile Engineering sunrise Career

Children have many dreams before selecting a career. They dream of becoming a doctor, engineer or a civil servant. Few are successful in achieving their dreams, because they are set on their goals, while some beat around the bush before enrolling in a course. Any aspirant, who has set his goals on engineering, must talk to his seniors or those in the field to check out his aptitude, interest and employability, rather than take up a course in which one gets a seat and think about other things when you reach it. Many students are unaware of the various disciplines in engineering and wake up while filling the application forms.

In today’s competitive world students opting for Automobile Engineering have a bright future. If one has been watching television, a commercial that comes to one’s mind is the Maruti ad where a person even after going to the NASA space center is concerned about the mileage the Juno vehicle would give. With costs going up, consumers seek cheaper and better options of vehicles be it petrol, diesel or CNG driven or big or small vehicle and better pick up if it is a two-wheeler.
Some of the other ads enlighten us on what is the work of an automobile engineer when they say that such and such car has facilities like more leg space, side air-bags, relaxing seats, gas-electric hybrids and others. With this it becomes clear that somebody has designed these features for the comfort and safety of consumers.

A novice would wonder what Automobile Engineering is. In short, Automobile Engineering is related to design, manufacturing and maintenance of automobiles. With increase in demand for vehicles and with entry of new technologies, automobile engineering is an emerging field. It deals with every part and aspect of automobiles, like body, engine, gear, fuel efficiency, quality control to name a few aspects. For pursuing a course in Automobile Engineering, many students prefer taking Mechanical Engineering as specialisation in bachelor’s degree and then study Automobile Engineering in masters.

Just like after pursuing education and taking up employment, one needs to constantly upgrade skills, for latest knowledge in the field, even the automobile that has been on the roads needs upgrading.

Apart from improving the vehicle, an automobile engineer can also think of adding value to the vehicle in other departments like aero-dynamic, fuels, chassis, electronics, emissions, and others. An automobile engineer can show of his talent in bringing together modern technology and tradition for a better utility vehicle.

In order to become an automobile engineer, an aspirant must have love for mechanics and electronics. S/he should be creative, able to follow techniques, work in a flexible environment and for long hours if need be and also most importantly have good communication skills.

The pre-requisite condition for seeking admission to an undergraduate programme is a pass in 10+2 examination with MPC subjects. Those wishing to study at post graduate level should possess B.E /B. Tech degree. All students are provided specialized training and detailed knowledge in their various course studies.

Admission to B.E/ B.Tech courses are made on the basis of marks obtained in +2 and merit in all India entrance examinations like IIT JEE, AIEEE, BITSAT and State entrance exams. Admission to M.E/M.Tech courses is through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering examination.

An automobile engineer must realize that s/ he would be the first person to test his invention and prepare reports if there are any shortcomings and ensure its safety before its commercial use begins. During his course of study, a student learns designing of a vehicle, plastic absorption and impact, in relation with steel or fiberglass. One also learns at what temperatures different plastic material should be put through for molding of the vehicle parts. As a technologist, one is aware about the characteristics of paints used on the vehicles to make it all weather proof. During the course, one also learns the various stages of vehicle production before its final assembly.

An entrant in this field earns Rs 20,000 and one climbs the ladder with experience. Salaries also vary depending on the company and experience. Those willing to go abroad can try their luck and also learn and be part of a team that makes inventions and develops new technology.
